This morning on Y100 (my morning non-music listening of choice), they were talking about a woman in Salt Lake City, who, upon finding out that she needed a C-section to deliver her twins or they might die, refused the C-section. Not because of religious beliefs. Because she didn't want the scar.
She delivered her children vaginally, and one of the twins was dead. An autopsy has led doctors to believe that both would have lived if she had done as advised. She was arrested on charges of murder, with $250,000 bail posted.
I don't think it's possible to talk about this without bringing up abortion (though I'd have to say that at the nine-month mark, we're a little beyond "my body, my choice"). Or blind-ass stupidity. Sweetie, if you'd rather have your babies die than mar your precious body, then maybe abortion and a more permanent birth control are for you.
I've read an article (too lazy to look it up now, but hey, it's a slow day at work - maybe later) about a childless, unmarried woman who asked for a tubal ligation because she never wanted any children. Her doctor suggested she undergo a psychiatric exam. Where was someone like that at any point in this woman's life? Maybe we're looking at it the wrong way, and IUDs should be inserted upon puberty, and you have to go through a psychiatric exam to prove you CAN have children, and have it removed.
You don't just squat out babies and let them raise themselves. Being a parent involves a lot of devotion and responsibility. You are now no longer living for yourself - you have a little life to care for and protect and raise and teach and guide. Maybe she shouldn't be sent to jail - just sterilized and have the living baby taken away from her. And forced to work at a burn clinic, or somewhere she can see life-altering scars every day for the rest of her life.
