Part of me is all, "What? Wait, WHAT? The Museum Of SCIENCE and INDUSTRY has no fucking business having a Harry Potter Exhibit! We're actually bouncing back from the assault this country has taken in the realms of science and logic and education, and their immediate response is an exhibit about magic?"

And the other half is all, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LET'S GET TOGETHER WITH EVERYONE I'VE EVER MET AND GO TO CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!"

Hat tip to [livejournal.com profile] k_diddy for tweeting about this :D

That's the excuse/rationale behind it, anyway.

(Actually, I suspect the MoSI got the nod because it's the most "fun" of the major museums in Chicago, and then they worked backwards to rationalize it. BUT WHATEVER GUYS, we got it first!)

From my old job, I remember the industry being divided on the integrity that's sacrificed for "blockbuster exhibits" as they called them. Supposedly museums plugging one non-science or semi-science pop exhibition that might be admission-premium is kinda like being a museum-sellout. Places that use this tactic say that crowds coming for the pop exhibit get education from the rest of the place now that they're there. But that's sort of like the old Patrician-era BBC that would put an intelligent show after a dumb popular one in an attempt to sneak it in or something. It doesn't work, and people resent it a little.

That said, it does bring in the money, and most museum integrity is bull anyhow. If I used to work for a place that'd rent the Harry Potter exhibition, I might be at work now instead of just waking up >_<.
