Japan has a whole different set of copyright laws than America, which allows millions and billions of doujinshi to get written every year.

For those lucky few who are not yet insane otaku, doujinshi = fan comic of popular series. Think of it this way - you have reasonable artistic talent, you like the Simpsons, and think that there should have been an episode where Homer, say, had sex with Ned Flanders -

(ha ha, I just made you all shudder)

- and in Japan, you would be allowed to write a comic of just that. And mass-produce it. And sell it. That's doujinshi. Fanfic meets fanart equals fanprofit.

Looking for Kingdom Hearts stuff tonight on eBay, I was kinda surprised at the lack of doujinshi. I mean, I KNOW there are thousands of girls on the globe who are saying, "See! Sora and Riku were beating the shit out of each other, fighting over Kairi. They're SO sleeping together! Hee hee!", and that usually spells thousands of doujinshi that agree. Only found three. And one was hidden within a Digimon doujinshi.

And then I remembered..."That's right, self. Because Kingdom Hearts isn't exclusively a Japanese property. It's also owned by Disney. And I'm sure it doesn't promote the Disney image to have a book about Riku riding Sora like a wild bull."
