40cakes: (Feel Better)

At least free cone day was quick and painless and then I got ice cream.

I don't know who has the facts about Virginia Tech, so I haven't had time to say anything about it. I have a friend who went there, so my first instinct was to panic, until I realized that since she's my age, she graduated about 4-5 years ago and wouldn't be there and probably didn't know anyone. Whew.

This morning, the SCROTUS banned partial-birth abortion. I read an article that said it just banned the method, and there's another method women can still use in that point of pregnancy, but I don't know how true that is, and if it is, how long it'll be before they go after THAT method. Wonderful.

Oh, and apparently now that Imus has been fired and no one's paying attention, it seems that Op-Ed writers are coming out of the woodwork to say that he shouldn't have been fired and what's the big deal about telling a bunch of bright, educated, athletic young women that they're nothing but whores? Golly, we're just too PC.

So here's a damn video of bunnies. Bunnies running around and flopping over each other and sniffing the camera and there's a brown one and a charcoal one and a couple with spots and they're just hoppy and bouncy and fluffy, dammit.

I love you. :)

And my qualm about the abortion thing is kind of graphic so I'm going to email it to you. :)

When I read the partial-birth procedure explained, it squicked me out a bit, but fake, special effects procedures on ER freak me out, so that's understandable. And if the thing were in my tummy, and that was the way of getting it out, I would be perfectly fine with that. I look forward to your email!

I totally think the firing was deserved, but I do agree with people who have raised the point that we're ambivalent about so much of the racism that goes on in the various forms of mass media and then we look to scapegoat one person so we can tell ourselves we're dealing with the problem.

The only time I ever listened to his show was when I was younger and stayed home sick from school, and that was only because WFAN broadcast it and I was waiting for all the sports talk programs to come on. His show bored the hell out of me. I do think they could have waited just one more day to fire him and let him finish that radiothon he does to benefit all the sick kids with cancer and the SIDS babies, seeing as how they let him broadcast for over a week after he made the comments, but whatever.

I think racism should be combatted wherever it exists, but for some reason Rush and Ann and Michelle are still about, running their mouths off. So I agree that we shouldn't say, "Ah, yes, Imus is fired, let us rest on our laurels!" Do people really think that now that Imus is fired, there's no more racism? That's worse than an anti-drug video I saw in elementary school, where the heroes stopped some kids in 1985 from using drugs, and thus drugs were forever wiped out.

Now, see here you make an extremely valid point. Racism still exists, but because what Imus did was so obvious, he was essentially fired in the name of standing up to it. That is basically BS, because he was really fired due to the possibility of adverse economic impact on his employers. There is no other way to explain how long it took until they pulled the trigger.

What Imus said was incredibly ignorant and stupid, but that type of racism tends to be the easiest to educate against. The really tough racism is hiding behind Rush and his political ilk. You have racism of opportunity and economics that does more damage than the stupid name calling that Imus did. But because they hide that racism in proposed laws like voter ID cards, redistricting, and other means designed to keep voting power away from "them", it's much less noticed by the general public.

And classism comes into play also. Let's face it, certain races and cultures are more prevalent in certain classes due to witheld opportunity or poor education, so when the far right dictates policy by economic advantage, they are in effect being racist to some degree too.

It doesn't matter what the method is or what the alternatives are, what matters is that Politicians are making the decisions on what medical procedures WE can have, not doctors.

This is true. Mostly male politicians, at least one of which who well showed his disrespect for women before getting put on the bench.

This is the best I've heard it put. Thank you.

I like the big fat brown one the best!

Oh yeah, abortion ban. At the risk of sounding patriarchal, I've never been a fan of the partial birth abortion. There aren't a lot of circumstances that they aren't necessary, as opposed to getting an abortion sooner. And the concept of partial birth seems to give legitimacy to the possible value of the squirming body leech they're dragging out.

At the same time, that's not a good enough reason to ban it! There are always circumstances which have unique demands, and the procedure isn't world shattering. I'm sure there'll be a late term complication that may kill the mother, and partial birth abortion will be the only solution, in the future. So I can see putting a restriction on the method because it's kinda gross, but banning it is just taking things too far. Even someone opposed to partial birth abortion can't logically support a ban on it.

I find the procedure pretty gross too, but the alternative method is equally gross and pretty much involves a blender, as I understand it. If the Supreme Court is interested in banning things that are gross, they should next focus on cooties, boogers, poop with hair in it, and Monsanto.

[livejournal.com profile] cheekybaby also quoted part of the decision that apparently has allowances for the life of the mother, but the language in it suggests that by performing this procedure for other reasons, the physician has "killed a human fetus." Because a fetus at 3.5 months is just like a human being. If I ever have pro-lifers for dinner, I'm gonna bake them a cake that was only cooked for 15 minutes and say it's flambe.

Haha, you don't have to make them a 15 minute cake, just show them some pictures and play "fetal human or fetal pig?" It's pretty hard to tell at that point if it's a pre-baby or a pre-ham sandwich.

And just for the record, I am pro-banning poop with a hair in it legislature. It's time that we stood up and protected our families.

Oh, Bush.

You'll be gone in two years and yet your legacy of dicking women over will last forever.

And the Supreme Court had been doing such a good job of not pissing me off, too.
