Yesterday evening, [livejournal.com profile] spuffylover24 came by my desk and said, "Can I just say, I have no idea who this Robbie Williams guy is? I don't know who he is, and why you guys had to go to Mexico to see him, and what the Hell he does!"

Do you remember the band "Take That"? Sure you do. They were a boy band. They sang "Back for Good".

Here's a picture of the band. There's Robbie on the left. Awww, lookit his long hair!

So Robbie was the "bad boy" of the boy band and got kicked out. But that was okay, because he was gonna be a superstar!(And really really good-looking.) He did a cover of George Michael's "Freedom '90" and everybody loved it, and he got a record deal! His first US album was called The Ego Has Landed, and if you're the average American, it has the two songs of his you'd recognize, "Millennium" and "Angels."

He's never made it big in America beyond those two songs, for whatever reasons (being American fans, we sure as Hell don't know them). He's pretty much a brilliantly rich international superstar for the rest of the world. He lives in Los Angeles, but doesn't tour or release albums in the US. Probably because he gets enough love everywhere else, he can tell us to fook off (he's from the North [plenty of planets have a North {maybe 2 of you get that}]).

I'll post "Rock DJ" because it's [livejournal.com profile] zuppy28's favoritest song (warning: some sorta nudity - boy parts!):

Oh, and here's the video to "Radio" because it's one of my favoritests:

Watch those videos and look at that dorky white man dancing and tell me you don't love him too! TELL ME.

Thus ends the lesson.

What?! That's hilarious. I assume MTV knew at the time? There was, also, a listing on YouTube for a British style cribs with him in it.

HAHAHA...is that the one jessica simpson covered? I really only pay attention to the tabloids and how drunk she looks all the time...not her music.

Rent/bu/dig out the DVD for "A Knight's Tale"

He did the lead for Queen for the movie and there's a music video on the DVD.

"We love thee, Robbie Willams!"

Hee! I think I remember that! I also have the second Friends soundtrack, which has him covering the Pet Shop Boys' "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing".

Bizarre anecdote: sometime in the middle of high school, there was either a regional or national contest where the school that collected the most food/donations for some charity would win a concert at the school by the legendary Take That.

Damn if my school didn't win, and even though a good 95% of students had no idea who Take That was, it was still pretty cool.

Then, when they were trying to nail down a date to schedule the campus concert, Robbie left, the band collapsed, and we were SOL. Fuckin' Brits.

sometimes, you have to go to Mexico City and see concerts where former boy band singers sing show tunes with their old buddies. I mean, you know? Totally...
