Feeling sleepy today. Must fight urge to go to candy machine. And/or gelato place. And/or bakery with chocolate puddin'. Etc.

The other day I acquired an overwhelming sense of respect for the documentarians of Winged Migration. There was a Pudgy Little Birdieā„¢ behind my car, and I tried to sneak up on him to take a camera phone picture. No such luck. He heard me a mile away. He hopped away, and coninued hopping to the point where I worried that he couldn't fly (no worries - he could). These are the things on my mind.

Anyone have salad recommendations? I really hate salad, and I think this is mostly due to hating lettuce. Hate hate hate. I hate iceberg, I hate romaine, I hate whatever type that is that essentially looks like I'm eating a bowl fulla oak leaves. But I like veggies - radishes, carrots, cucumber, celery, tomatoes (fruit poser), and I'm even getting to like onions - whoa! Most of what makes me choose a greasy Panini or a "hearty" soup instead of a salad for lunch is that the choose-your-own salads even start out as "pick which giant bowl full of lettuce you want so we can sprinkle other stuff on it". And knowing that I won't put much of a dent in the giant bowl of lettuce while I eat everything around it makes me feel wasteful. Kirk said he'll bring me a spinach salad one of these days, since I like spinach with other things, but I wanted to see if anyone else had suggestions.

I think if you're going OUT for salad, it'll probably be a bit hard to find a non-lettuce ally. But spinach is a good start, if the salad place can hook you up. I know the ShopRite near my work had a salad bar, and though you could bypass the lettuce altogether, they do offer spinach leaves to start. And Saladworks, if you've got $8 to drop on a salad, can do pasta as a base, I think. I never cared for that option, but it's available.

You could bring salads of your own design from home, but I know how often I find the motivation to do that. What's more, I have Tupperware (well, Gladware) and I got salad pre-made in a frickin' BAG on sale. It's in the fridge, still sealed. :)

Yeah, when I worked at Acme, I used to sort of get a strange assortment of salad toppings with no lettuce. And starting out with pasta as a base just feels like cheating!

key to a spinach salad is baby spinach. i't's much more tender and yummy than old spinach. use that as your base then just add whatever delicious vegetable accoutrements you like- shaved carrots, olives, marinated artichoke hearts, raisins, tomatos, avocado, parmesan cheese, broccoli, cheddar, peas, chickpeas... the possibilities are endless. otherwise, go for a greek salad. it's mostly cucumber, tomato, and onion with some olives and feta usually too. no lettuce whatsoever. those are easy to make at home also.

I don't really like olives, and I remember going to a Greek restaurant and not caring for the salad - maybe it was the dressing they put on. I think my option is just to get my arse up earlier and cut up some veggies myself for lunch and snack.

SARABETH'S. It's $3.75, but it's delicious and yummy and comes in a little glass jar that you get to keep! And it's chocolate pudding with smooth whipped cream and shaved chocolate on the whipped cream!!

I love shephard salad...it's just tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and some seasonings...plus you can add feta cheese, yum... This place delivers to us and is relatively cheap http://www.istanbulgrillny.com/Menu.htm

is it called shepherd salad? that's the salad i was referring to above as 'greek salad'. when i lived in prague the also called it 'chopsky salat'. because it's chopped, i guess. and at my deli here in brooklyn it's simply 'cucumber salad'. in any case, it's delish.

Came home to watch the Food Network, saw this on Rachael Ray and thought of you. :)

Where's Waldorf Salad.

She says to put it on a bed of lettuce when you're DONE mixing all the other stuff, but it still looks mighty salady with no lettuce.

Weird. Second episode had this: http://foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_29861,00.html

And she talked about her Greek friend telling her that Greeks don't do the lettuce, so you can leave it out of the recipe if like.
