Jack Thompson Murdered by Vengeful Video Game-Playing Parent
Miami, FL - Jack Thompson was found dead in his Miami home Thursday, his body found to be stabbed, shot, beaten, and had several limbs removed. State officials have ordered an autopsy to find a cause of death.
Police are holding Osaki Kim, 42, for questioning in their investigation. Kim confessed to the murder, but is planning on pleading insanity, officials said yesterday. "I had no idea what I was doing. I was in a dream-like state after spending hours playing A Modest Proposal, and it made me kill him. The game taught me to kill lawyers," a statement from Kim reads.
Thompson fought violent and sexually explicit video games for 18 years, but is most remembered for proposing - oddly enough - his own violent video game late last year. Rare picked up the proposal immediately afterwards and produced and distributed AMP, as it has come to be known, for release this past June. AMP follows the adventures of a parent whose child was murdered by a boy who played violent video games. The main character is a father out for revenge by violently murdering video game execs, lawyers, developers, and - in a move so crazy that Thompson actually protested himself in one of this year's most bizarre turns - mowing down children and teens playing at a local Gamewerks.
Kim purchased the game because he thought it would help him deal with the loss of June Kim, his son who was murdered two years ago by a group of teenagers who played Grand Theft Auto regularly. According to his statement, Kim "soon became addicted to the game, and [he] saw the rest of [his] life as an extension of it."
Internet support sprang up overnight, and various video game developers, producers, distributors, as well as video game enthusiasts ("gamers"), have raised enough money in Kim's defense to raise Johnnie Cochran from the dead to represent him in court. (AP)

Date: 2005-10-12 08:34 pm (UTC)I liked how in his proposal, Thompson cited urinating on corpses a la Postal 2. Fans of the series such as myself (god, now I feel dirty...) will recall that there is a portion in the storyline where the Postal Dude goes to the headquarters of the company which made Postal and kills his boss. Any self-respecting Postal 2 player will flip out and kill everyone else in the building as well, half the fun of that game is that it's designed so the player feels inclined to randomly flip out and kill people =)
You also smoke crack in Postal 2. He should have put something about that in there.
Aside from all this, Thompson fails terribly when it comes to criticism of Swift. The reason Swift's Proposal worked literally, as well as being a satire, was the plausibility which the narrator endows through his voice. Licensing large store names would cost far more than his donation, which seems like a meaningless gesture. Forget learning law, logic, or not to use ad hominum attacks in official setting. Thompson needs to learn how to read.
