Hmm...I'm off work on Monday, and after my doctor's appointment, don't have any plans...anyone want to come help me pretend I know how to build a house?

Volunteers Needed! Help Rebuild the Gulf Coast

Hurricane Katrina destroyed nearly half a million homes. In response to this unprecedented devastation, NBC News' Today show is pleased to announce an effort to help the Gulf Coast rebuild, one nail at a time. In partnership with Habitat for Humanity and Warner Music Group, NBC News will transform Rockefeller Plaza into "Humanity Plaza" for five days next week as homes are built around the clock for families displaced by the hurricane.

Work will begin bright and early on Monday, September 26. By the end of the week, dozens of prefabricated homes will have been assembled and shipped to the Gulf Coast region.

But this can only happen with your help. Habitat for Humanity needs more than 1,000 volunteers to donate a two-hour shift of their time next week, helping to assemble these homes. Tools and prior experience are not needed, just a willing heart.

Construction will take place around the clock.

Work will be conducted in teams of four. The web registration tool allows you to sign up yourself and three friends, colleagues, or family members. Or you can come alone and be assigned to a crew.

I used to go out to Pennsylvania with my church in high school, and we'd tear down houses and stuff so that other people who knew what they were doing could come in and rebuild them and sell them to needy families at lower prices. Was much fun and I'd been thinking about doing something like that again.

I'm off Wednesday and it sounds interesting. Did you do Habitat at all at Rowan? They started it up my junior year and I did it that year and I wanted to do it as a senior but classes and The Whit just wiped me out so much I rarely did. But it was pretty cool.

Oh, and I also passed it along to someone at work who I think might be interested. She actually wrote to Habitat to see if they needed help down there in the Gulf Coast and was thinking about going there when she took vacation time.
