See, that's what gets me. I wouldn't WANT my friends to defend me if I was doing something stupid, I'd want them to TELL ME TO STOP THE STUPID THING.
And if my friends were defending me in a way to make me look worse, not better like telling a dying woman she should just fucking die I would have not a qualms about telling them, "Stop it. You're making me look bad."
Probably. If that's the case, she's probably not doing anyone she defends much help, either.
Defending someone is an art, and if you're not careful, you can shoot yourself in the foot. Cassie Claire's fangoils don't come a-running when someone takes the Draco Trilogy, etc., to task anymore with comments about "She's so popular! You're just jealous!" anymore for just that reason.
