I'm disappointed! I thought the "Ben Stein" writing the article was Ben Stein the actor. It's my understanding that Ben Stein is a very intelligent man - was looking forward to his take.

It is Ben Stein the actor-- "Bueller? Bueller?" He's a Renaissance man. XD

And also a former Nixon speechwriter.

In case you couldn't tell. XD

(I thought the article said that, and that's why [livejournal.com profile] arafel was confused?)

I have a whole icon just for those days now.

Oh, Ben, you still remember who signed your checks back in the day. Respect for the rule of law is so sixties, after all.

I wonder if anyone will write in and remind him that Nixon's policies and secret war in Cambodia set the stage for the Khmer Rouge to take office.

Well, they would, but Clinton got a blowjob and Reaganomics worked, dammit! Nixon's, like, a hero or something.

Not bitter today. Nope.

God, the parallels between Nixon's administration and the current one are phenominal and frightening.

They totally, totally are. I wonder where we'll start fighting the secret war.

Just remember, he is NOT a crook!

I don't claim to know much about that period in history, but it's my understanding that Nixon's Secret Plan to end the Vietnam War was to send more troops over. Sound familiar?

Send more troops over and bomb the fuck out of Cambodia. In secret. Remind me, if you're interested I know an excellent history of the war, but it's in my bookcase at home and I don't remember the title.

He actually wasn't that bad with the drug war, IIRC-- his programs emphasized prevention and treatment far more than ours do now. But aside from that? Oh hell yeah.

You're mostly right. :)
The propaganda had been around for decades, but was so tied to racism and classism that having a drug war would have been impossible. Nixon's reaction to the huge amounts of drug use during the war, both at home and abroad, was to turn a blind eye to it in Vietnam (when not outright supporting it) but to identify, outlaw, and fund the drug war here at home.
Fucktard.

"Marihuana Reconsidered" is full of hippies, but is an otherwise useful book to have lying around. Plus, it has an article by Arthur Clarke!

I might have seen it before but this is the first time I've actually paid attention to it - your icon is great.

Thanks! I stole it from someone who stole it from someone. The original author is in the icon comment, hopefully.
