Well, I mean, it's not like using the bus and then saying, "Man, I hate the bus." Writers have choices. There are other fic archives, and angelfire is free if nothing else. Some writers look down on it because anyone can post there and so the quality starts to spiral down. I know that because it's so huge, it's good to go there to browse, just in case something good will pop up. But when someone says, "God, there's nothing but Mary Sues and bad grammar on FFN," and follows that up with, "I just posted my fic there! Go read it!" I want to ask, "Does that make sense to you?"
I've never called it the pit of voles myself, but I have been known to complain about the fact that the bad fics outweigh the good. But that's just the way shit is, and I'm pretty much over it now.
If I were someone who saw absolutely no redeeming factors about the site, then I wouldn't post my fic there. Cuz really, what's the point?
It just strikes me as hypocritical to say it's shit, especially when saying, "I just posted this at the pit of voles!" I mean, it got called that because there's not a quality filter and ANYONE can post there. When I first really started hearing the phrase, it was by people who never went there anymore, because they thought of it as a pit of voles. So when people who still use the site use the phrase, it seems like some sort of twisted advertising. "Fanfiction.net is so lame because there's only shitty fic there by bad writers anymore. I just posted my latest fic's 11th chapter!"
LOL! Point, there. But I can see people saying, 'Yeah, I post at the Pit of Voles because I get good readers that way/more feedback/there's still some good stuff in amidst the crap' too. :shrugs:
Exactly! "I post at FFN to get the most amount of readers and biggest exposure. Man, that site sucks!" Of course, the reason I haven't posted there in a while is because they took away the NC-17 rating. O:-)
I tend to call it the "manure pile" myself. I still use it. I mean... there are some diamonds in the manure pile (good fics buried under all the bad). There are even a few small forums (for small or obscure fandoms) that are mostly good fics.
I like to think that I write some of the gems that get lost in the manure there.
I see no problem with insulting the site, but still using it. Those who insult just... wish it could be better, you know? It's an easy system to use... you get readership... it's just that most of the good stuff gets lost under all the bad. You've got to search for it. It's like digging for treasure.
Some people, unfortunately, seem to get their only readership there.
Oh, and NC-17s are the staple of Adultfiction.net... which the Godawful Forum people call "The Pit of Uber-Voles." A few users post there.., but... how can you NOT call a place that allows "Rugrats" and "Gummi Bears" porn - and gets submissions - that?

Date: 2004-11-14 10:26 am (UTC)Well, yeah. Just because you use something regularly doesn't mean you can't talk shit about it.
