Right, quick question.

What's the shit about Kerry mentioning Cheney's gay daughter during the debate? It was a positive remark as far as I could see. Unless the liberal media cut off the rest of his comment, which was "She's just being who she was born to be. And homosexuality is a birth defect, and we need to put them down. Cackle."

No, really.

As described by a lesbian caller to Rush Limbaugh's show, it was the idea that John Kerry, instead of answering the question, decided to discuss the sexuality of a private person, as if it was her only identifying aspect, and how that effects her relationship with her family solely for political gain. Kerry could've just as easily talked about Jim McGreevey, a public figure who chose to make his homosexuality public. Instead, he cites the sexuality of a private figure because she happens to be the Republican Vice President's daughter, and since all liberals are convinced that conservatives hate gays, Kerry figured that this would damage Bush's reelection campaign, which Mary Cheney herself is working on. "If they know Cheney's daughter is gay, these crazy Christians/right wingers won't vote for Bush!" Surprise, Senator, everyone voting for Bush already knows... and doesn't care, because we realize that someone's sexuality doesn't define them, that it's their own business, and that it has nothing to do with national security or the economy, the two largest election issues.

It was a really trashy, offensive thing to do to both the Cheney family and Bush supporters, and was solely based on the ungrounded belief that Republicans/Conservatives hate gays. Then again, what do you expect from a candidate whose running mate used the death of Christopher Reeve for political gain, promising that if John Kerry is elected, the disabled will "get up out of that wheelchair and walk". For a party that mocks Christianity, they sure don't have a problem claiming credit for the Messiah's miracles. I'll believe that John Kerry was just being respectful to Mary Cheney and embracing her, not just her sexuality, when he walks on water.

I would, however, point out that it isn't Kerry that's trying to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. And perhaps by mentioning Mary Cheney's sexuality he was trying to point out the inherent hypocrisy in saying you respect a person's lifestyle while at the same time trying to pass a law that restricts their rights.

Just a thought.

Personally, I think the whole thing is much ado about nothing. Both sides have been dragging family members into it when they probably shouldn't but I have no idea what it was about this exactly that set the Bush-Cheney camp off.
