I simply voiced my opinion on a message board that I go to about the general quality of what I once thought of as a very fine fanfiction community. It was MY PERSONAL OPINION that the fanfic quality IN GENERAL - was declining. No specific writers. On GAFF, people are allowed to do that - post websites that they personally think are not so good. I was voicing my dissapointment that I place I used to love was now IN MY OPINOION declining. I thought the MPreg challenge was being taken seriously! I was worried for the quality of the community. I thought "Oh no, this was a great place for fanfiction, and it keeps going downhill - now, MPreg! Gah!"

I made no personal attacks against anyone.

Two things spring to mind.

1) EG has always used the kittyface as her sig. If you didn't recognize that, oops, maybe she should have just used her name--but it's certainly not true that she was trying to hide anonymously.

2) The decline of the community thing just boggles my. Quality depends entirely on membership. People come and go, more people join, which increases the likelihood that more bad stuff will be posted. I'm not being defensive here--I don't think the quality of drabbles posted reflects personally on me or anything, so I have no reason to be. I guess I don't really get evaluating a comm with such a transient nature, but I can accept that that's just a different way of looking at things. Fandom happenings tend to occur in waves, so if I don't like something, I trust that in a while it will change--usually I'm right. Not always though.

3) Oh hell, I thought of a third thing. I didn't post over at GAFF (though I used to be a regular there, back in the day) because I didn't think it was a good idea to hijack one of their threads. That said, after the Anne Rice crack, I don't blame EG for doing so--it had WHAT to do with 100bullets? Knowing Casey, she won't deny her own wank, but I have to say--what did you THINK was going to happen when you referenced the thread at 100bullets? Certainly you're not obligated to hide it, but it seems common sense not to mention it if you truly don't want bitchery.

Anyway, we had a peaceful month totally free of angst. I really hope we can go back to that.

I saw it happen, *back about oh, 5, 6 years ago) to another fanfiction community that eventually got shut down, I saw it happen to a message board I once adored. It happens. Look, my goal was never to make 100bullets the Magic Happy Fun Land of Only Fabulous Drabbles. Hell, I didn't even think about it for more than 30 seconds--Cadence, enabler that she is, said "Hey, why don't you make this?" and I said "Okay!"

All I want the comm to be is a place for people to post drabbles. Hopefully good ones, but you know, I'm not going to kick people out because I don't like their drabbles. Of course some are better than others. Duh. That's because this is the real world, not something out of Kurt Vonnegut's fucked-up imagination. I'm not worried about 100bullets becoming ffnet. Jesus, there's no way people could even fit the kind of crap they post their into 100 words, and if they tried, well, I imagine I'm a more active mod than Xing & co.

What would you have me DO, Shadsie? Seriously? Say I give you the benefit of the doubt and decide to work on ways to improve the comm. What do I do? Ban certain themes? As Char's challenge just proved, the theme has very little to do with the quality of the drabble. Should I then institute a "3 drabbles, you're out" program in which people can post three sub-par drabbles and then they're gone? Do I form a review board? Do I try and recruit good authors and boot out the bad ones? What would make you happy, Shadsie? The one thing I'll never do is say people must avoid certain themes and pairings because I think they lead to bad fic. That's bullshit and stifles creativity.

100bullets isn't trying to be a beacon of goodfic in the darkness. All it is is an outlet for people to post tiny spurts of inspiration. Whether they're good or not depends entirely on what people do with the outlet, and I'm pretty damn sure that it will be a lot better without people constantly bitching at each other.
