But can they be either of those things AND a nincompoop? Thoughts?

Fascist AND Communist at the same time...certain Polish citizens in those dark and confusing days of World War 2 when they were being taken over by Stalin and Hitler nearly simultaneously?

Either way, if you're fascist or communist, you're a nincompoop. Duh. That's what books AND bombs taught me.

Why can't the books and bombs just work together?

Not without some severe compromise and juggling of beliefs/ideals, no.
