Movie Review: Across the Universe

40cakesPut on a Beatles album. Any one of them, really. It can even be a greatest hits compilation, or a mixtape that's all Beatles. Got it started up? Great. Write a fanfiction connecting all the songs. It doesn't matter how tenuous the links, just go with it. Even if the album you've put on is one of obscure studio sessions so one of the tracks is just John Lennon making farting noises into the mike for 15 minutes. Work with it.

Moulin Rouge was much better at making a movie that incorporated existing songs. This movie was a two hour series of music videos that may or may not have had a plot. But at the time you're watching the movie, you don't necessarily notice that, because the music is SO GOOD you're just sort of enjoying the feeling. It's only after the flick that you think, "Wow, Prudence was really an extraneous character, wasn't she? They could've easily named Sadie Prudence and kept the same vibe. And they didn't establish Max early on, and I seriously wasn't sure if he was supposed to be high school girl's boyfriend for a moment there."
Snap judgement: Stay home with some friends and do heavy drugs while listening to the Beatles. It might cost less.

Date: 2007-10-16 11:20 pm (UTC)I saw this movie when it was called "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", and it had the single redeeming factor of the Bee Gees.
