40cakes - Nielsen unveiled its first results from its new GamePlay Metrics service. Sony's PlayStation2 accounted for 42% of video game console usage during June, followed by Xbox (17%), Xbox 360 (8%), GameCube (5.8%) and Nintendo's Wii (4%). The PS3 accounted for only 1.5% of total minutes used. PC gamers played Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft 4 times more than any other PC game. Nielsen reported that 68.1 million gamers used a console in June, playing an average of 7.5 days for the month. The service is expected to give a boost to the nascent in game advertising medium.
I wonder how this measures video game usage - if the little black box now has plugins for video games, and measures the amount of time a certain input is used. Or maybe they just have people write down what they do. In other news, I got two more songs up to 5 stars in Guitar Hero II last night. I think I have four songs left before I've beaten Medium with 5 stars. Yes, I know y'all are better, and I've come to terms with that.
Oh, and in case you've been waiting with bated breath, A&E's The Two Coreys premieres Sunday night at 10pm.
- Director/Producer J.J. Abrams revealed that Leonard Nimoy has signed on to return as Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek movie, and that the young Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto (Skylar on Heroes). Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.
- Steven Spielberg, appearing via satellite with Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf and Ray Winstone from the set of Indiana Jones 4, announced Karen Allen, who co-starred in Raiders of the lost Ark, would return in the new movie. Indian Jones 4 is set for release Memorial Day weekend 2008.
Johnny Depp's signed on to play Barnabas Collins in a film adaptation of Dark Shadows.
Friday Fun Fact: A "xanthochroid" is a blond-haired, blue-eyed person with fair skin.
