Seriously? Last time I checked the TSA site, it said knitting needles and crochet hooks are allowed. Admittedly, my eyes may have glossed over the word "plastic".

I've read that people have had trouble with overzealous inspectors.

...of course I also know a guy who put a 10" knife in his carryon and got through.
