Feb. 8th, 2006 09:10 pmKirk: Eventually Madonna's going to get so full of plastic and so surrounded by children that she'll turn into Michael Jackson.
Oh, and "Since [Yo]U Been Gone" won a Grammy, which means that every single time
prettykate and I get drunk and jump around to that song, we're totally justified.

Date: 2006-02-09 02:03 pm (UTC)Jesus, you've just destroyed my entire idea of good and evil. Mike B.'s only comment on my MySpace account was to heckle me for listing Kelly Clarkson among my favorite music. Fuck that, she won a Grammy! I'm validated!!!! :)

Date: 2006-02-09 02:34 pm (UTC)Also, fuuuuuuuuck the Grammy. Seriously. Diana Ross, Queen, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys? None of them have ever won a Grammy. Elvis Presley. ELVIS PRESLEY! He's only won in the Religious category. David Bowie was only nominated once, and didn't win anything until the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. Louis Armstrong only won posthumously. And don't get me started on the pioneering rap/hip-hop artists who've never won because their careers peaked before the Grammy people even recognized their work as a genre.
Look, I don't like Britney Spears and her contemporaries. I don't think there's ever been any confusion on that point. But your affection for their "music" doesn't make you less smart, or competent, or worthwhile as a person. Sure, I'll tease you mercilessly. That's what I do. But you should just like your music because you like it. Don't look for validation from an head-in-the-artistic-sand that proudly uses as its symbol a machine that was invented in 1887!

Date: 2006-02-09 02:52 pm (UTC)And no, I'm not REALLY looking for validation in the Grammy. One of the most useful things I learned at Rowan and with the group of friends I acquired there was that it's OK to dig what you dig. I own both Kelly Clarkson albums without shame. My Gilmore Girls DVDs are on proud display, and I'm THIS CLOSE to constructing a Rachael Ray collage and hanging it in my living room. :)
