Somebody name me a very good, affordable mp3 player. Because my iPod charged last night for 8 hours and died this morning after 45 minutes of play. And while I'm glad I got it for free, it's irritating all the work I put into getting it so it could be a piece of crap. Stupid Apple, making things incredibly sexy and adorable, but making the innards all crap. I even did everything right and always ran the battery down before charging it again. Alternately, does anyone know how to dismantle an iPod and rewire it so it'll take, like, Duracell batteries? I'm good with batteries like that. I know batteries like I know vaginal ultrasounds*.

I've heard good things about Zen Creative's little colorful mp3 player (the Nomad?). Help!

*That's a post for another time. And a filter.

Can I be on the vaginal ultrasound filter?

I love health related stuff!! I used to work in a hospital!

I ♥ Casey.

I ♥ my vagina! Sure, you can be on the ultrasound filter! If they give me pictures, I'll post them and we'll all play Rorscach test with them!

Well do you have a warrenty?

Apple will fix it or give you a brand new referbished one.

My first Ipod was a piece of crap, when they sent me the new one I was So amazed at how well they actually worked.

Sounds like you have a bum battery--mine lasts longer than that even when I'm switching songs left and right with the light on and the equalizer on (all of which will run the battery down). Before you chuck it and get another one, you might want to look into getting a new battery.

I have a Zen Micro by Creative, and I'm happy with it, but I've heard some people say things about similar products giving out after a year or two of use so I'm not sure how much I should trust it.

But it's cute, and it has an FM tuner in addition to the 5 gb of storage...

I've heard good things about the IRiver and the Rio Carbon. My Dell Jukebox works great, as well.

I don't know much about the different brands (mainly because I have an iPod mini that I won at work), but my husband is something of a tech geek and was extremely horrified that iPods don't play .ogg files (or .flac, I think was the other one?), so I'd recommend getting something that does play those formats as well as mp3s . . .

You can buy one from Apple for 60 bucks
Which is alot cheaper than buying a whle new MP3 player

I bought it because I heard ipod batteries were crap.

Don't charge it unless its completely empty, it will help the battery last longer

.ogg's are what lj phone posts are made on, but I'm not familiar with .flac. Hmmm....

But the new iPods will play video!

Buy a new battery or a new iPod? Apple sells iPods for $60? Where is this? Is this through that guy in IT who schleps Apple?

I've always done that - not charge until it's almost dead. And yet...

My understanding is that .ogg are higher quality than mp3s *and* smaller, and .flac is actually a lossless format. (Don't quote me on it, though.)

Video, though . . . that's pretty tempting. ^^

I have had a 4g ipod, I now have an ipod nano, my girlfriend has an ipod mini, and we all have had good success with battery life. They get better every product cycle, but in the meantime... http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery/

You can either send it in to Apple (or take it to any store or dealer who works with Apple) and they'll do it for a hundred, or you can get a kit with directions and a battery and do it yourself for fifty. Either way is cheaper than buying a whole new one, ymmv.

Originally launched in 2003, the service offers replacement and installation of a new battery if your iPod is experiencing poor battery life and is more than a year old and not covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan."
