40cakes: (Weekend Update)

Dude, vacations are so much more fun when you do things during them. Also, you could replace the word "vacations" with "relationships" and you would have a similar assertion from me.

In summation, as my camera is big and does not travel well, and thus I don't have a picture summary of the past week and a half:

1. Furniture building is fun! Can I build it? Yes, I can!

2. How the Hell did I ever live in a twin bed? Granted, sheets are more expensive now, but man! How did I survive?

3. Kamikaze Girls is very much fun. Viz, when did you get so awesome? Release on DVD and soundtrack on CD soon, plzkthx.

4. I don't think they're actual giants. But they might be. Whatever they are, they're good in concert, especially when it's free. Also, TMBG has apparently been around since 1982 also, and thus I feel kinship.

5. DDR is ferior to Pump It Up. I will still waste credits at Dave & Buster's on it, though, as I refuse to lose to a machine. Kasparov won, I can do it too! Similarly, piles of little crane-game stuffed animals are cute and comfy.

6. Downstairs roommate is not as awful as former roommate Jen would have had me believe. She does however have her own set of problems.

7. Word Wars is a pretty dern good documentary about the Scrabble-obsessed. Now if only there were some show about those obsessed with the Pursuit of Trivia.

8. Terry Pratchett seemed like a lovely gentleman, and I'm sure he was very funny, but the only book of his I've read, I didn't like, and while he was speaking, my nose was buried in the new Arkham Asylum GN.

9. You'd think orange roses would be harder to find, but they're not. Not that I'm complaining, because yay I heart having orange roses in my room. Though they're kind of dying now.

10. Goth clubs are fun, especially as they play music I like, I can dress how I want, and everyone's got their own style of dancing/is too wrapped up in themselves and friends to notice other people, so I don't feel like a total spaz on the dance floor.

11. Nintendogs is not worth all that money to get a DS. Nintendogs is not worth all that money to get a DS. If I keep repeating it, perhaps it shall sink in. Nintendogs is not worth all that money to get a DS.

12. Having a Denny's to just the two of you at 1am? Bliss.

13. Discovering the Palisades mall? AWESOME. (shit, I'm a Jersey girl now, aren't I?)

14. Showing someone Utena and trying to answer perfectly innocuous innocent questions without giving anything away? Really fun.

That's it for now, as my sleep schedule is all over the map, and I'm waking up at 6am to get to work. Oy vey. Remember, 9/19 is "Talk Like a Pirate" day, so keep at it, mateys! And now, an unanswered question from this weekend:

If you're a furry, but not a vegan, does this involve some bizarre form of cannibalism? Discuss amongst yaselves.

You didn't know about the Palisades Mall?

*gasp shock horror*

Nothing beats explaining to out of staters what's exactly in there. "Want to go ice skating? Ride the ferris wheel? Let's go the mall!"

... now I want to go back to the Rainforest Cafe.

Hey man, Menlo Park's got a Rainforest Cafe! And I've got Woodbridge about 5 minutes from me. I do not explore much!

The nearest malls to me are 45 minutes away (in either direction): The Rockaway Townsquare in Rockaway and the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, N.Y. I suppose Willowbrook isn't TOO far, but I'm not crazy enough to deal with the Route 23/46 craziness unless I'm going to AnimeNEXT.

I so need to get out of Sussex County. We have Wal*Mart and a Bed, Bath and Beyond and that's about it. (we just got our first Wendy's EVER last year).

Dude... I keep meaning to ask you, where ARE you living now?

So if we add in Essex, is it an orgy or a love triangle?

Love triangle.

An orgy is all 21 and a black bear.

I only went to the Rainforest Cafe there once about five years ago. The mock-thunder was so loud I couldn't hear my date across the table.

Oh, but the rack of ribs is wonderful. If messy. And yes, the noise is disturbing. But small stuffed endangered species! Consumer whore am I!

What Pratchett book was it that turned you off?

If you say Good Omens, I will cry.

The Colour of Magic, which [livejournal.com profile] jaina has informed me is old and sucks anyway, but I wasn't in any energy to give more books a try.

Grrr. Okay, I'll just snarl, I guess. I loved the whole Discworld series, but I can see the earlier books being a more particular taste. The fantasy parody that he started off with in The Colour Of Magic evolved as the series went into much broader social satire, which is really smart and very funny.
Also, Good Omens, which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman, is one of my favorite books ever. The basic idea is that Armageddon is upon us, the Antichrist is born, and then there's a mix-up, and he gets raised by the wrong family. World-ending hilarity ensues. I strongly recommend it to everyone I know that reads for pleasure, to the point where, when I worked at B. Dalton, I felt like I should have been getting a commission on his sales.

Good Omens seems to be the one everyone's read and enjoyed, so I'm tempted to steal it from jaina pick it up. But for God's sake, I skimmed "Where's My Cow?" towards the end because I felt it was dull. Maybe it's just not for me.

Where's My Cow? Can't say I know what that is. =)

It's the children's book Sam Vimes(?) of the Night Watch reads to little Sam every night at 6pm, no matter what. It was released the same day as Thud! and they were passing around a copy at the signing.

Huh, I hadn't heard about either of those. I guess I'll have to look out for them. Thanks!

Thud! is the brand new book that he's on the signing tour for right now. It's not supposed to be out yet, if memory serves.

I tried The Color of Magic too and couldn't get into it. I also tried Mort and didn't like that one either. Conclusion: Terry Pratchett is not for me.

Indeed. I need to pick up Mostly Harmless so I can complete my DA set.

Honestly, while I have enjoyed all of his books to some extent, those are definitely part of the Lower Echelon. I won't bug you, but if you ever feel like trying the better ones you know where to find me.

Mort was recommended to me as one of the better Terry Pratchett books, so I guess opinion varies widely. Honestly, his brand of silly doesn't appeal to me, in the same way that [livejournal.com profile] campfuckudie boggles me - so maybe it's for the best that I don't get into Pratchett. :)

Dude, you brought your own bed to college? We had standard issue wooden plank twin size, and that's all we got, dammit.

And I wanna see Word Wars.

Word. I can fit two pillows on my bed now without one rolling up against the wall! And, also, um...ahem.

Word Wars was very fun. I want to go visit Battery Park now and check out the old men hardcore Scrabble gamers in the afternoon.
