Utena thoughts
Aug. 2nd, 2003 11:24 pmMay get spoilery, but it's okay, since I think I'm the one person in the universe who hasn't seen it to the end yet.
I bought the first DVD of the Black Rose Arc back in November. I was not impressed. The first episode was our first full glimpse of Akio, sure, but other than that...exposition, Kozue, Shiori. Oh look! A Nanami filler episode! Joy! I don't hate Nanami - she's just a one-note character, and so even episodes where she gets what's coming to her are dull. The bit in the movie with her as a cow was worth a laugh. An entire episode devoted to her as a cow was irritating. On top of that, the duels were too short. Not that I think the Utena series is all about action, but if you're going to take the time to duel every episode, do it right, dammit.
So when the first dvd of the Apocalypse/Akio Car arc was coming out with a box and a tshirt, I preordered. And because I'm obsessive and can't do anything out of order, I bought the rest of the Black Rose Arc so I could catch up.
I enjoyed. Even though the Nanami episodes made me want to sleep (Why ARE there so many? I'd be more interested in Juri and Shiori, or what was up with Touga, or how Saionji was received upon his return to Ohtori Academy...), there was some great stuff going on. The episodes with Wakaba hiding Saionji and eventually dueling Utena were terrif. And when Utena slugged Mikage? AWESOME.
The animation quality has really improved, seen best during the Nanami flashback episode (why God, why?!). And while I know repetitive bits are things shoujo anime is made of, it seems like there are more here.
1. Touga's whole "Can you hear the loud car? VROOOOOM!"
2. Akio flipping over the car.
3. Utena and the gondola thingie.
4. Those ubiquitous shadow girls.
5. The Utena and Anthy synchronous bedtime show.
6. Pulling out the sword is just that much longer now.
Juri still rules, though. The whole Ruka/Juri/Shiori thing was Fantastic. With a capital F, yes.
Talking with
jaina about whether it's spelled "Jury" or "Juri", I decided "Jury Duty" would be a good title for a hentai fic. My mind works like this ALL DAY.
